Issues

The strongest solutions come from listening to families, to neighbors, and to the people doing the work that keeps our communities strong.

Meghann Foster
Strengthening Communities

With eight years of local government experience—as a city council member and later as mayor—Meghann has spent her career working directly with residents and local stakeholders to solve problems and strengthen her community. She understands firsthand how state decisions impact local governments.

State officials should partner with local leaders, not punish them for addressing the needs of their constituents. The best solutions are built by listening to local leaders, volunteers, and residents who understand what their communities need to succeed.

As your state senator, Meghann will:

  • Support local leaders — Every city and county is unique, and local leaders know what works best for their communities. State government should empower communities, not hinder them.
  • Protect home rule — Local governments need flexibility to respond to their community’s unique needs. State leaders should respect local decision-making instead of imposing one-size-fits-all mandates.
  • Invest in local solutions — Strong communities come from sustained investments in infrastructure, housing, and quality of life at the local level.
Fighting Cancer

Iowa is facing a growing cancer crisis, with some of the fastest-rising rates in the nation. Keeping Iowans healthy requires bipartisan solutions, with a strong focus on water quality, research, and community-driven public health initiatives.

As your state senator, Meghann will:

  • Address water quality issues by restoring funding for nitrate sensors, incentivizing conservation practices, and working with soil and water conservation districts to tailor solutions to local needs.
  • Expand community-based public health programs by strengthening county public health capacity to deliver education, outreach, screening, and prevention initiatives.
  • Increase cancer research funding by expanding state and federal research into Iowa’s rising cancer rates and identifying prevention-focused solutions.
Addressing Affordability

Iowa families are working hard yet still struggling to afford life’s basic needs—from healthcare and food to quality childcare and housing. We need policies that support working families, expand access to essential services, and keep Iowa communities vibrant and resilient. In her local government role, Meghann collaborated with local leaders to address challenges such as childcare access, food insecurity, and affordable housing.

As your state senator, Meghann will:

  • Address the high cost of childcare by investing in community-based solutions that support providers, expand available openings, and enhance the quality of care.

  • Protect and strengthen Medicaid while pursuing additional solutions to expand access to care and lower costs statewide.

  • Address the high cost of food by strengthening community-based programs and expanding support for nutrition and food-access initiatives.

  • Advance policies that expand affordable housing options so families can live and thrive in the communities they call home.

Protecting Civil Rights

Civil rights are not a zero-sum game. They ensure every Iowan—regardless of race, gender identity, religion, disability, or sexual orientation—has the freedom to live without fear of discrimination. Unfortunately, Iowa has rolled back protections that once ensured safety and equal rights. Reproductive freedom has also been restricted, limiting the right to make personal health care decisions. These rollbacks harm communities already at risk, and send the message that some Iowans matter less than others. Civil rights are for everyone — and they must be restored to ensure every person can live, work, and thrive in our state.

As your state senator, Meghann will:

  • Restore and strengthen anti-discrimination laws to ensure all Iowans are protected.
  • Reaffirm Iowa’s commitment to civil rights, so opportunity truly extends to everyone who calls this state home.

  • Work to restore and defend reproductive freedom, and Iowans’ ability to make personal health care decisions without political interference.
