Civil rights are not a zero-sum game. They ensure every Iowan—regardless of race, gender identity, religion, disability, or sexual orientation—has the freedom to live without fear of discrimination. Unfortunately, Iowa has rolled back protections that once ensured safety and equal rights. Reproductive freedom has also been restricted, limiting the right to make personal health care decisions. These rollbacks harm communities already at risk, and send the message that some Iowans matter less than others. Civil rights are for everyone — and they must be restored to ensure every person can live, work, and thrive in our state.
